Emilio García Gómez and the revival of the Andalusian imagery

Emilio García Gómez annual conference

Amman, September 9, 2018– Under the patronage of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies, the Embassy of Spain in Jordan and Institute Cervantes in Amman organized the annual Emilio Garcia Gomez lecture given by Professor and translator Salvador Peña Martin of the University of Malaga.

The conference aimed to reflect on the Andalusian history in poetry, architecture, and the connection between the history of Spain and Andalusian culture. In addition, he addressed one of Emilio’s most significant contributions on al-Andalus, especially regarding his research on the Alhambra in Granada, and his books and translations, such as Rāyāt al-mubarrizīn wa-ghāyāt al-mumayyazīn (Banners of the Champions and the Standards of the Distinguished) by Ibn Said al-Magribi and Ṭawq al-Ḥamāmah (The Ring of the Dove) by Ibn Hazm.

“Gómez (1905-1995), the master of Spanish Arabists, carried out research work on the Alhambra in Granada, and Arab scholars translated some of his books,” said Professor Salvador Peña Martín. “Gómez presented numerous publications about classical and modern Arabic history and literature, and contributed to translating many Arabic texts into Spanish”, he added.
